Especially during winter, I like to treat myself to a cup of hot chai tea. If you’re not familiar with this type of drink, let me explain shortly. Chai (meaning tea) latte (milk) is a herbal drink (originally coming for India) that is very sweet and heartwarming. It takes quite some time to make it but it is truly worth it!
Ingredients for 2 cups
- 3/4 cup of milk (or coconut milk)
- 1/4 cup of water
- 3 cardamom pods
- 2 cloves
- 3 pink peppers
- 1 cinamon stick
- a dash of cinnamon powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of ginger powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
- 2 teaspoons of black tea
- 4 à 5 teaspoons of Gula Java
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Let’s cook it
Start with mixing all the herbs together and ground untill very fine. Put the mixture in a kettle together with the water and cook for about 5 minutes. Then add the tea, Gula Java and the milk and let it cook for about 3 more minutes. Then turn off the heat and let the mixture cool down for about 7 mintues. Put everything through a strainer to get out the loose tea and the herbs. As for decoration I like to add some more cinnamon powder on top of my tea. Enjoy!
If you don’t have the time to make it, there are some ‘ready to go’ mixtures on the market that just require you to add some milk and water. I really like the chai mix from David Rio and Baru.
Lots of love,
